Education and Religion

On Sunday, October 5, 2014,  Tom DeWitt, interim president of Wells sat with 20 or so interested people and spoke to us about his own spiritual journey, his fondness for this church community and his perception of Wells as a whole and of Wells' students specifically. His conversation was a reaction to Bob's piece in the  June/July Beacon where he admittedly vented his frustration with the state of some Wells students with whom he had contact. College debt, "naked careerism", and parental pressure influenced students some students he dealt with in a negative way. Tom provided some socio-economic-religious background contrasting the student of the 50's say, with the students of today and while admitting the challenges today are more difficult than in days gone by, education is doing what it is supposed to do for the majority. It was a fruitful discussion and thanks to Bob for raising the question and to Tom for  responding.
